Ruth Segal – Slightly Different

“To me, art is a process of bridging between my mind’s reflections and the miscellany of color and lines dancing and shimmering across the canvas, in oil or aquarelle, the hand and the brush are but a tool. At times, painting is just an expression to an experience of a certain now taking place in real-time, but at times there are pieces that wait a long time to reach realization…”

This is a second exhibition for Ruth Segal at the Montefiore Gallery, an extension of her earlier exhibition and incorporating various periods of creative work.

Segal continues to primarily explore local scenery, characterized by the native Israeli color scheme and the recurring motif of the tree: Deeply rooted in the ground she loves, never standing still, its branches flailing in the wind. Always in the midst of a storm, the wind, the wild wind that is the spirit of man. She uses rich and vivid colors to depict the vistas she so dearly loves, expressively and alive, so befitting a woman with such a passion for life.

Unlike her previous exhibitions, this one incorporates still-life painted during an earlier period. Much like her scenery works, these do not attempt to depict precise, realistic still-life. They are expressive creations, characterized by swift brush strokes and thick contours. She abstracts and creates white spaces alongside primary colors, creating a strong contrast of colors. The background remains dark and veiled, once again alluding to restlessness and turmoil. The composition is compressed and it seems as though the object, much like the scenic tree, is fragile and feeble.

Segal expresses her internal reality through painting, a spectrum of emotions expressed in paint and brush upon canvas. Each painting is a piece of her life’s story.
